Meet The Champions - Steven Bielby

What's been the main difference this season to get the team over the line ?

The main difference has definitely been having a consistent squad, with plenty of depth. We’ve had some quality players in the team over recent years, but until this season we’ve never been able to string a period together of having the same squad week in, week out. There has been a battle for places in the starting 11 each week, which shows the quality of all 20 or so players involved in the first team this year.

Apart from Hedon, what has been your best/favourite moment this season?

Excluding the obvious highlight of the Hedon game, the Scullys game the week before has to be the highlight for me. Once we won that game, I think that’s when it sunk in for everyone that we could go on to win the league, and we had more than what it would take to do so. There was a real confidence and belief running through the team during and after that game.

Who has been your stand out player?

I definitely can’t just pick one player. It has been a massive squad effort throughout the whole season, with various stand out players in different games when we’ve needed them most. I honestly think there will be at least 12-13 players being named for player of the season this year, which sums up how much of a team effort it’s been.

How were the celebrations after the Hedon game?

Top class. The changing room was bouncing after the game and that energy continued for the rest of the day/ night. I’m sure there will be a few more celebrations over the next few weeks, and rightly so. The lads deserve it all with the effort they’ve all put in this season.

What are your plans/targets for next year?

I think the main target for next year needs to be to retain a similar squad going into the first game of the season, including a few other top players hopefully coming back from injury. If we can do that I think the success will follow, in the league and the cups.
