After many years at the club, how did it feel to create history and win the Humber league for the first time?
JC: I felt very emotional, my initial feeling was one of relief and then came the joy and delight in knowing how much this would mean for so many involved with the club both past and present.
I also was immensely proud of all the players and it was great to do it alongside Watko.
MW: After been at the club for over 20 years first as a player where we came close a couple of times finishing runners up but to then have the privilege to be asked to manage the 1st team alongside Joe as well and now to win the league makes me extremely proud and emotional, to win a league takes a lot of hard work and dedication from everyone involved in Pocklington Town it's not just about the 1st team so without the committee, the grounds staff, Jimmy, Colin, John, Ian, the other senior managers Carl, Marc, Danny Ben and Rich plus every other player at the club this great achievement isn’t possible so a missive thank you to everyone at the club.
All managers take one game at a time, but at which moment did you feel that this was achievable?
JC: In a very tough league, we've run this close before, so it wasn't until the third goal had gone in against Hedon that i really believed!
MW: I always knew that this group of players could compete at the top of the Humber league providing we could improve the availability of players and have a more consistent squad as the quality was always there, the season started very similar to others where one week we would be good but then the next we would be missing 3 or 4 players and we’d drop points. I think this really started to improve around December/January where we started to get a more consistent squad and results started to improve, we started to keep more clean sheets and with the attacking players we were creating and scoring goals. So after putting a run of results together we started to close the gap to the teams at the top around February and first went to the top of the league in March so it was around Feb/Mar I got the feeling we could achieve something special, and we did.
What is your best/favourite moment of the season and were there any stand out goals for you?
JC: Favourite moment had to be when the third goal went in against hedon! Standout goals included Nathan Walker's lob against Reckitts to win the game, and another was Fraser Hansen's volley against Scully's at home in such an important match!
MW: There’s been so many to be fair but turning points I think you have to look at the Hornsea game at home on the 29th January when drawing 1-1 and Muzza poked in a 95th minute winner and then the following week away to Reckitts and been 3-1 down with 10 minutes to go and going on to win the game 4-3, both games showed what this group of boys could achieve with a never die attitude and togetherness. But sorry it has to be the final whistle at Hedon knowing you’ve just beat the current league champions in their own backyard to become league champions for the first time.
Do you have any plans/targets for next season?
JC: I'm still buzzing, will finish the season out and see what next season brings!
MW: It's hard to look at next season just yet as all we are thinking of is the last game away to Hall road and our skipper Scrowy lifting that cup at the end of the game (followed by some big celebrations). But the ultimate test is to defend a league title and that’s what will drive us all on and do everything in our powers to have these feelings again.
Lastly, is there anything you want to say to those supporters who have been to the games throughout the season, but especially the big turn out at Hedon?
JC: I'd like to thank all the fans who turned out throughout the season, home and away. They helped us become Humber Premier League Champions! I wanted to mention all junior and senior, past and present managers for their input which ultimately allowed us to achieve this success! A special thanks to the committee for backing and believing in us, enabling us to make history for the club!
MW: I think it's safe to say seeing all the people there at Hedon shows why Pocklington football club is the best club in the area by far, seeing the joy on those people’s face who come to every game or the smile on a committee members face and seeing the younger generation of the club the 16/17 year olds been the to witness it and hopefully inspiring those lads to want to do the same in years to come make me extremely proud to be part of this club, thank you everyone for your support and I hope everyone enjoys Saturday as much I will
