Meet The Champions - Ben Alport

Centre back or centre mid? Where do you feel is your strongest position after some impressive performances in both?

Great question. I seem to have spent a lot of time switching between the two over the last few years and I have to admit I’ve quite enjoyed it. It’s nice to have a mix of the two.

To be honest though, with the squad depth we’ve had this year, I’ve just been glad to play as many games as I have. Sometimes you looked at the bench and were just glad you were playing. If I really had to choose one though, I think it would definitely be in the middle of midfield though. You don’t have to head it as much there.

At what point in the season did you believe the title was possible?

I think the point I felt like we could win the league was when we beat Scullys at home. I played for the first team as a young lad around 10-12 years ago and they always had our number. I’m pretty sure this season was the first time I’d ever beaten them. So beating them was definitely a physiological win for me.

In my opinion, they were the only team that could’ve potentially stopped us this year. They play some good football so beating them really cemented my belief we could win.

What was your favourite goal?

I’ve surprisingly got a handful to choose from this year. I think my favourite has to be the volley in one of my first games back for the club though. It was a late goal that put us in front at home. One of many pile on’s down at the Balk this year!

What was your funniest moment of the season?

With this set of lads there is never a dull moment. Both on and off the pitch I have some incredible memories from this year. We’ve all become really good mates and enjoy spending time with each other.

My favourite moment has to be when Jack L lost his head and shouted ‘it’s Bobbly!’ though. It was so out of character and really tickled me. It’s safe to say the lads didn’t let him forget it and he’s not made one excuse since. What a player by the way.

What are your plans/targets for next season ?

Next year could be a massive year for the club. The quality in this squad is ridiculous. It’s more than good enough to compete at a higher level. If we can keep the squad together and maintain the unbelievable mentality/attitude that we had post Christmas, silverware is very likely.

Personally, I’d love to win the East Riding Cup though. It’s the only one of the 3 trophies I’ve not won yet, so to lift that would be unreal.
