Meet The Champions - Alex Zachariou

What attracted you to come back to the club?

I was injured for four or so months this season and I was struggling to get regular game time to get me back up to match speed so when Joe called me it was a no brainer to come help the boys and in the process get back on the pitch playing.

Having recently played at a higher level, how would you compare this group of players?

Yeah this is a very good group, it’s got every aspect of a successful team both on and off the field and I think the belief this title will bring can only improve the squad.

What was your favourite moment of the season?

I’d probably pick one of the two Hedon games. The match at our ground because of how tight the game was. It really had that big match feeling and was competitive throughout so I enjoyed that.

That or the Hedon away game, because that was a special day for all involved. It was amazing to see how much it meant to everyone, especially those that have been involved with the club for a long time. They deserve it.

Who was your stand out player?

Ben (Alport) or Stevie (Beilby). Never played with either of them but I’d say both of them have stood out for me as top players from what I’ve seen since joining. You could make a case for every player in this team to be honest.

What are your plans/targets for next season?

I think our target should be to maintain the same standards and levels of performance from this season. If we do that, I don’t think there’s a team that will be able to get close really.
